Historical background

On 18 March 1785, peasants of the Beloyarskaya sloboda department from the village of Romanova — Pyotr Zagainov and Nikifor Krivosheev — requested permission to resettle to a site they had found near the mouth of the Belaya River, which flows into the Bolshaya Rechka, citing a shortage of arable land, hayfields, and forest at their former place of residence; the Biysk Lower Land Court supported the petition and proposed naming the village after Zagainov — the surname of one of the settlers. In 1792, the village had 14 households and 84 residents. In the 19th century, the village became one of the largest in the territory of the future Troitsky District due to its favourable geographical position. The village had a church of Saint George the Victorious, built in 1884 and closed in 1938. According to the 1926 census, Zagainovo had 862 households and 4,928 people; a rural council, school, library, reading house, and shop operated; the village was the centre of the Zagainovsky selsoviet in Bolshe-Rechensky District, Biysk Okrug, Siberian Krai. A notable figure is Nikolai Mironovich Marchukov, Hero of the Soviet Union, born on 5 April 1922 in Zagainovo to a peasant family; conscripted into the Red Army by the Troitsky District Military Commissariat in September 1940, he fought on the Western, Southern, and Southwestern Fronts, participated in the Donbas Strategic Offensive Operation and the Melitopol Operation; he was awarded the Orders of Lenin, the Patriotic War 1st and 2nd classes, two Orders of the Red Star, and the Order of the Red Banner; a street in the village of Troitskoye bears his name, and his name is immortalized on the Memorial of Glory in Barnaul. Also mentioned is Alexey Andreyevich Nekrasov — a local craftsman called the "local Kulibin"; he worked at the Zagainovsky timber enterprise for over thirty years as a fitter, battery attendant, and turner; in 2012, the Nekrasov family won the krai relay of parental feat "Warm with the Warmth of a Parent's Heart" in the category "Family That Raised Foster Children."

Natural surroundings

The village is situated on the left (southern) bank of the Bolshaya Rechka River, slightly below the confluence of the Belaya River. The Nikolsky Spring (holy spring of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker) is located on the right bank of the Borovlyanka River; silver coins from 1873 and a copper five-kopeck piece from 1889 were found in the spring; in the early 2000s, local residents restored the spring, and in 2004 it was consecrated and renamed "Nikolsky Spring." The northern boundary of the Bolsherchensky State Natural Complex Reserve of krai significance runs from the village of Zagainovo along the road across the Bolshaya Rechka River to the village of Listvyanka; the total area of the reserve is 33,600 hectares; its objectives include preserving the natural complexes of the Upper Ob pine forest, restoring the beaver population, and protecting habitats of rare animal species — the black stork and the white-tailed eagle; rare plant species grow within the reserve, including the four-angled water lily, bog arum, and caldesia.

Living culture and memory

Residents observe national holidays of the Russian Federation and district celebrations. According to legend, the water of the Nikolsky Spring healed a sick girl; every year on 19 December and 22 May, the days of veneration of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, parishioners of the Holy Trinity Church make processions of the cross to it. In memory of the Zagainovo Church of Saint George the Victorious, which in the past was not only a religious institution but also an educational centre (a literacy school and a church-parish school operated there), teachers and students of the Zagainovo Secondary School created a museum containing household items, tools of the villagers, and Orthodox objects — icons and rushnyks (embroidered towels, called "Bogovy shtany" — "God's trousers" — in the village). Local creative groups operate at the House of Leisure. The prevalent religious tradition is Orthodoxy; the gastronomic culture is represented by Russian cuisine.
