Historical background

The selo of Ust-Aleyka is located in Kalman District, Altai Krai, and is part of the Ust-Aleysky selsoviet; the first reliable mention dates to 1745 and appears on P.I. Shelegin’s map. In the 17th century the first Russian settlers appeared in the bend of the Alei near its mouth, and their descendants now make up half of the residents. In 1886 the kulak Sushentsev built a water mill with four sets of millstones above the selo; three butter plants, Tumaikin’s brick works, a kirza works, a tannery, and a sheepskin workshop also operated. In the Soviet years the selo was affected by dekulakization and repressions; in 1950 the kolkhoz Donbass and the kolkhoz of the Third Five-Year Plan merged into the Sverdlov kolkhoz, which in 1957 became a branch of the Kubanka sovkhoz, and in 1964 the Yagodny sovkhoz was created on the base of the fifth branch. In 1961 the first hectares of a fruit-and-berry orchard were planted; in the 1960s residential houses, a bathhouse, a water tower, a school, a water supply system, a calf house, and a workshop were built. According to 2026 data, the population is 649.

Living culture and memory

Orthodoxy is widespread in the selo; Orthodox and state holidays of the Russian Federation are celebrated. In 2025 the selo marked its 280th anniversary with a concert program, treats, and children’s entertainment; the annual holiday “Sudarynya Maslenitsa” is held with folk music, contests, horse riding, chastushki, and treats of blini, pies, and shashlik. Within district festivals, family events are held where participants talk about family traditions, draw a family coat of arms, and compose poems; the association Umelitsa, led by E.A. Vladimirovna, operates. Russian cuisine is represented in the food culture.

The project was carried out with a grant from the Russian Science Foundation No. 26-28-20225
